Imagine

Imagine the color of the garage. The roof will be similar to the house, but what about the boards and battens? The same as the house? the same as the barn (mud red)?, some color all its own? and if so, what? I'm leaning towards the same red as the barn will be. Opinions welcome.

Garaged

We have the start of a garage! Against the advise of most, we decided on a detached garage. We have such wonderful scenes out of every side of the house, we couldn't bear to put a garage on to interfere. So, we went with a detached garage. It's only a few steps to the house. Maybe when we are ninety or so, we can construct a covered walkway to get between there and the house.

Sheet Rock

This past week the sheet rock work began. Lots of progress was made on the first floor. It sure makes it look more like a liveable house.

Siding se fini

The siding was finished all around the house this week. Inside, the sheet rockers have arrived and have installed many of the ceilings and are starting on the walls. It's looking more and more like a house and less and less like a construction site. Also, some of the barn foundation was dug. Lots of progress!!

A Sunny Day and Siding

Topping Out

Glenn and Dan have put the last stone on the fireplace. What a job it has been. Tomorrow is clean up, so the stones will be spic and span and ready to show all their character. The scaffolding will also come down. Next test....does it draw????

Beehold, the Bees

On Wednesday, Don installed two bee nucleuses into their new residence on the southeast knoll of the property. They will be well protected from bear attacks, thanks to the electric fence surrounding them. They were moved into two new hive boxes, single story to start, with floors to be added as the family expands, and painted a traditional white...which they could care less about I'm sure.

I imagine what they really care about is having lots of blossoms, lots of nectar, and for this rain to stop so they can get out to collect it all.

Just Me

That's me taking a break and checking out the upstairs fireplace progress.

It's Saturday, and Don and I were doing 'yard' work at the property. I brought over lots of perennial plants from Butler Farms that I'm going to want in a garden here. Don tilled up a big patch of ground for a holding-over garden. Don worked at getting an electric fence erected around the patch of ground where the bees will be living. Wednesday the hives arrive.

Rain or Shine....

we'll be well protected. The roof is now finished. Our new, standing seam, dark bronze, roof is expected to last a lifetime. Good thing we really like it! I think by the end of next week, when the siding may also be done, or at least coming along, we'll get to see how well our color scheme works. It looked good in our mind's eye.

Everything AND the Kitchen Sink

This morning, I was emailed the kitchen design. I love it when it's no longer left to my imagination. They even added a view over the kitchen sink.

Testing, testing.....

Andy bought one box of the siding we had picked out for us to 'try on' and for the crew to see how well it goes up. Everyone agrees...it's a 'go'. Andy will now place the full order and the rest of the siding will begin to go up sometime next week.

ROCK ON!

The stones are being built up on the fireplace in the den. In this picture, the blue-stone hearth is covered by some boards, but you can see the very substantial blue-stone

mantle. We decided to go with a stone mantel because the heat being thrown from the fireplace was apt to dry out and warp a wooden mantel.

Fireplace Progress Report

Glenn has begun the work of putting field stones onto the fireplace. I can imagine if a field stone had feelings it may be pleased to know it was going to end up on a fireplace right on the land from which it was taken.

On the House

no.....not free beer. We're trying to decide which type of shake to put on the house as siding. We for sure want synthetic (i.e. never have to paint it) shakes. But what color? what texture? what length? straight or uneven? etc. etc. Eenie meenie miniee moe.

Down and Up

The scaffolding that surrounded the house for long time is now down and the soffits that will forever surround the house are now up. Next decision, what material to use to underline those soffits? V-groove pine? painted sheet rock? Also down...our pine bough...in order to make way for those soffits. Next up?
